Descriptions of Allah
The Qur’an, however, description of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala certain such as :
The Most Gracious is firmly established on the throne. (20:5)
Everything will perishes except Allah Face. (28:88)
What is worn under Allah eyes. (20:29)
The hand of Allah is above their hands. (48:10)
The heavens are rolled in Allah right hand. (39:67)
The one that Allah created with two hands. (38:75)
And similar. How can we understand these description of Allah? Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) have organs similar to ours? These and other verses of the Al-qur’an are part of what is called the allegorical verses in the holy book, the true meaning of which only Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) knows. This is referred to in the following verse:
And ‘He who sent down upon you the book, in it are verses of the same meaning as defined, are the basis of the book, while others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts are perversity follow what is allegorical seeking discord and in it the attempt to interpolate it. But no one knows it is true interpretation except Allah. Those who are firmly rooted in knowledge say: We believe in it, each one is from our Lord. No one will remembers except that they are right. (3:7)
Based on this verse and following the injunctions of the Prophet Muhammad SAW Early scholars including the leaders of the four main schools of thought took the attitude the next. They said : we believe in these description of Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) but leaves the knowledge of their Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala). We should refrain from interpreting them on the lines of similar description of Allah given to human beings, simply because this is how Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him warned us. Think of the creation of Allah and never think of Allah, for you will never appreciate it as it deserves (6) Muslim scholars also said that whatever we think of Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala), he is totally different with that we think of him. In Sahih Muslim Abu Hurairah said, people will continue to discuss and dispute until it says: This is the creation of Allah who created Allah? Who is to say something like: I believe in Allah (7) glorify Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) from the description could be imagined that in mind. This is because it is impossible for Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) to be similar to mortals.
Commenting on the verse which says :
The Most Gracious is firmly established on the throne. (20:5)
Ummu Salama, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad said: You cannot imagine how, but the institution does not know God on the throne, faith asks us to accept without question to deny borders on disbelief. The same attitude is adopted by early scholars such as Imam Malik and many others. Prominent scholars today have the same conviction. Another group of scholars, however, tend to interpret these divine attributes in such a way that becomes the glory of Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala), although caution you to take them literally be equivalent to human qualities. One example of their approach is their interpretation of chapter 38 verse 75, where they got the two hands of Allah (subhanahu wa Ta’ala) alone for confirmation and care to affirm Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) ‘s of his servant Adam.
In addition to the above two approaches, the nearest of which is the first of the Islamic faith, even if it is not excluded, there were some perverse attitudes influenced by alien philosophies, such as Greek philosophy and others. One said that all these descriptions are identical to those of humans. Another group gave description of Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala), while a third group went from one extreme to another, and has denied any description of Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala). These groups were killed at birth, and the only ones who have remained in existence are the first two, that are very close to each other. The Quran gives us a definitive answer, when you say about Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) :
Nothing is like Him and He is the Hearer, Seer. (42:11)
Based on this verse we can safely confirm these description of Allah, but do not compare them with everybody else. Instead we believe in them and accept them as they are.
